Arknights: Endfield attempts to take the Arknights universe in a bold new direction by combining several gameplay genres into one experience. Instead of focusing solely on tower-defense mechanics like the original Arknights, the new game blends action RPG combat, semi-open world exploration, and a surprisingly deep factory-building system. While this ambitious approach makes the game stand out, it also raises questions about whether all these elements work together smoothly.
Developed by Hypergryph, Arknights: Endfield is technically a spin-off rather than a direct sequel to the 2019 mobile game. The original title centered around strategic tower-defense gameplay mixed with gacha mechanics. Endfield expands the formula dramatically by adding real-time action combat and a large world filled with exploration opportunities.
The story follows a character known as the Endministrator, who awakens without memories and soon becomes the leader of the Endfield corporation’s mission on the distant planet Talos II. The narrative gradually introduces a variety of characters and factions involved in the exploration of the planet. While the plot includes familiar sci-fi themes and recognizable character archetypes, it slowly builds momentum as players continue progressing through the game.
Visually, Arknights: Endfield delivers a polished presentation. The game world features vibrant landscapes, futuristic industrial structures, and sleek technology that reflects the series’ unique style. Character designs follow the anime-inspired aesthetic commonly associated with gacha titles, while combat effects create flashy and exciting visuals.
However, some aspects of the world feel more decorative than interactive. Invisible barriers and restricted areas occasionally break the immersion during exploration. Despite this limitation, the game still succeeds in presenting an attractive and visually engaging environment.
Combat initially feels fast and satisfying. Players have access to standard RPG actions such as light attacks, heavy attacks, special abilities, and powerful ultimate skills. Dodging enemy attacks is essential for survival, and successful dodge timing can create opportunities for counterattacks.
As players progress, they assemble a team of four Operators who fight together during battles. Each Operator brings unique abilities to the team, allowing players to switch characters and activate special skills in strategic moments. Managing these abilities and chaining ultimates together can create impressive combat sequences.
However, the system begins to show its limitations later in the game. Enemy types become repetitive, and many Operators feel similar in practice despite their different appearances and skill descriptions. Additionally, AI-controlled Operators tend to rely mostly on basic attacks when they are not directly controlled by the player.
Another major gameplay feature is the factory system. Players can construct mining stations, processing facilities, and refining structures to convert raw materials into valuable upgrades. Managing these production lines can be surprisingly engaging, especially when optimizing efficiency.
Unlike dedicated factory simulation games, though, the system here primarily supports character and equipment upgrades rather than acting as a creative sandbox. Once factories are fully built, they require relatively little ongoing attention.
As the game progresses into its mid and late stages, the gacha system becomes increasingly important. Players must participate in daily activities, complete events, and collect rewards to obtain new Operators and improve their teams. For many players, this grind becomes the central gameplay loop.
