Proximity Mines are one of those weapons in GTA 5 that many players unlock but don’t fully understand at first. In general, they look simple, but how they activate, where they work best, and their limits matter a lot in real gameplay. This guide explains how Proximity Mines work in practice, based on how most players actually use them in GTA 5 and GTA Online.

What Is a Proximity Mine in GTA 5?

A Proximity Mine is an explosive that detonates automatically when a person or vehicle gets close to it. Unlike Sticky Bombs, you do not trigger it manually. Once it is armed, it reacts on its own.

In GTA 5, the Proximity Mine has a flat rectangular shape and no blinking light. Because of this, it is usually hard to see on the ground or attached to vehicles. Most players consider it a trap weapon rather than something used in direct combat.

Once placed, the mine waits for movement. When something enters its detection range, it explodes without further input from the player.

How Do Proximity Mines Activate?

After you place a Proximity Mine, it does not explode immediately. In general, the mine arms itself after about three seconds. It also requires the player who placed it to leave the immediate area.

Once armed, any pedestrian or vehicle entering the proximity radius can trigger it. This includes NPCs, other players, and even the player who placed the mine if they come back too close.

The detection range is roughly four meters. If someone enters that range quickly, the explosion happens almost instantly.

Can You Escape a Proximity Mine Once It Beeps?

When a Proximity Mine is about to explode, it starts making a beeping sound. This sound is meant as a warning, but in practice, it rarely helps.

Most players find that once they hear the beep, it is already too late. The explosion timing depends on how fast the target enters the trigger area. Vehicles moving at speed usually trigger an instant detonation, giving almost no chance to react.

On foot, you might survive if you barely clip the edge of the radius, but usually the mine does its job.

How Do Proximity Mines Work on Vehicles?

Proximity Mines behave differently depending on the state of the vehicle.

If you stick a mine onto a vehicle that is being driven by an NPC or another player, the mine will arm and explode shortly after. There is a small delay, but it is enough to destroy or heavily damage the vehicle.

If you attach a mine to a parked or inactive vehicle, it will not explode right away. This is where most players use Proximity Mines strategically. The mine stays attached and waits until someone enters the vehicle or drives it.

This makes Proximity Mines effective for ambushes, especially in busy areas or near mission objectives.

Can Proximity Mines Be Seen Easily?

In general, Proximity Mines are hard to notice. They do not flash or glow like Sticky Bombs. On darker surfaces or roads, they are almost invisible unless a player is actively looking for them.

Experienced players sometimes recognize them by shape, but most players drive or run right over them without noticing anything unusual.

Because of this, Proximity Mines work best when placed in areas where players do not expect traps, such as tight corners, ramps, or exit points.

How Many Proximity Mines Can You Carry?

One major limitation is the carry limit. You can only carry five Proximity Mines at a time.

Because of this, most players do not spam them randomly. Instead, they save them for specific situations where they know the mine has a high chance of triggering.

Once you place all five, you must use them carefully or restock before setting more traps.

Where Are Proximity Mines Commonly Used?

Most players use Proximity Mines in predictable scenarios:

Narrow roads or choke points

Race tracks in GTA Online

Mission exits or entry paths

Near parked vehicles that other players are likely to steal

In GTA Online races, Proximity Mines are especially common. The leading player usually places one on a turn or landing spot. Players behind often focus on speed and do not notice the mine until it explodes.

This tactic can create a gap between racers and change the outcome of a race quickly.

Do Proximity Mines Stay After You Die?

Yes, Proximity Mines do not disappear just because the player dies or moves far away. In general, they stay active unless something specific removes them.

However, if a mine is attached to a vehicle that despawns, the mine will disappear with it. This usually happens with vehicles that are not actively used by players or NPCs for a while.

Because of this, placing mines on important or frequently used vehicles is more reliable than placing them on random cars.

Where Do You Get Proximity Mines in GTA 5?

In GTA 5 story mode, Proximity Mines become available after certain missions or updates, depending on the version you are playing. In the enhanced version, they can be purchased from Ammu-Nation after completing the mission “Friends Reunited.”

In GTA Online, they are sold at Ammu-Nation for $1,000 each. They also spawn in specific locations, such as the main lobby of the Control Tower at Fort Zancudo.

Most players simply buy them when needed rather than relying on spawns.

How Are Proximity Mines Different from Sticky Bombs?

While both are explosives, they serve different purposes.

Sticky Bombs require manual detonation, which gives players more control. Proximity Mines work automatically, which makes them better for traps.

Sticky Bombs are visible due to blinking lights. Proximity Mines are usually hidden.

Most players use Sticky Bombs for direct attacks and Proximity Mines for area control and ambushes.

Are Proximity Mines Worth Using?

In general, Proximity Mines are not an everyday weapon. They are situational but powerful when used correctly.

Players who enjoy setting traps, controlling space, or slowing down opponents usually get the most value out of them. Players who prefer fast gunfights often ignore them.

Some players also associate Proximity Mines with high-level or modified gameplay environments, including discussions around  GTAم Modded Accounts , but the weapon itself works the same way for everyone.

Proximity Mines are simple on paper but effective in practice. Most players underestimate them until they get caught by one.

Used carefully, they can control movement, punish careless driving, and turn the tide in races or missions. Used poorly, they are easy to waste due to the low carry limit.
